Robinson, Bruce
   b. 1946
   Film-maker
   First an actor, then a screenwriter and then a director, Bruce Robinson first came to prominence with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for David Puttnam’s The Killing Fields (1984), but then achieved cult status with his directorial debut, Withnail and I (1987), a comedy about two drunken, world-weary but comical actors living out the last days of the 1960s with the sense of doom and disillusionment that Hamlet feels in Elsinore. This was followed by How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989), again with Richard E.Grant, The Shadow-Makers (1989) and Jennifer 8 (1992). He published his first novel, The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, in 1998.
